Improved Decision Making for Fire Officers

People often make poor decisions when uncertainty is present, and unfortunately uncertainty is everywhere today. The good news is that there are practical and proven strategies to significantly sharpen critical thinking skills, steadily improve troubleshooting abilities, and help people reliably arrive at functional, workable solutions, even in constantly changing environments. Many decision-making habits are counterproductive and produce needless anxiety and faulty decisions.  Sharpening a few skills will result in decisions that consistently hit the mark without the unnecessary turbulence and painful second-guessing that all too often accompany decision-making today.

During this workshop, attendees will:

  • Learn how to avoid common critical thinking pitfalls and traps.
  • Understand when and how to limit choices appropriately.
  • Know when quick (intuitive) decisions are likely to work, and when they are likely to be wrong.
  • Know which decisions are especially important to think through before confronting them.
  • Understand the two most important critical thinking questions to consistently ask.
  • Recognize good decisions that work out poorly and acknowledge bad decisions that turn out well.
  • Understand why expertise doesn’t necessarily guarantee good decisions, and learn how to rectify the issue.
